Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the world-renowned Austrian composer, was born in 1756 in the city of Salzburg, Austria. While planning for our first trip to Europe we made sure we included Austria, and specifically Salzburg, for two reasons: it was the filming location for 'The Sound of Music' and the birthplace of Mozart.
At just five years old, Mozart composed his first piece of music. By age 17, he was employed as a musician in the Salzburg royal court. His more than 600 compositions include numerous symphonies, concertos, and chamber orchestra pieces. Many believe that a composer of his genius has not been born since.
I had only heard these stories, but upon arriving in Salzburg, it felt as though the entire city was flowing with music. There were countless musical events and gatherings. As we walked back to our hotel late at night, we heard a piano and violin duet that made us feel as if we had entered a magical world.
Mozart's house is located near Salzburg Square in the city centre. You're allowed to go inside, but photography is prohibited. The small rooms are furnished exactly as they would have been in his time, with his musical instruments, household items, and furniture on display. With headphones, you can listen to a detailed description of each item.
After visiting the museum, we went to the square in front of it. As the afternoon was turning into evening, we sat outside a cafe. I tried to imagine Mozart walking down the riverside road and entering his home right there. I wondered if he had ever composed a new piece of music while sitting at the window, the pane of which was now shimmering with the light of the setting sun.
